Author’s Statement
The cock crew three times and the woman stirred in her bed and opened her eyes to behold the rays of the morning sunlight breaking into her bedroom window reflecting her blue drapes on the mirror opposite. She suddenly stopped herself with a jerk, staring at her pillow, looking around the room as if she was lost, and wondered “was that real or a dream?” She was referring to what seemed like returning from a journey. In the dream, her childhood cat had taken her to several places to which she traveled during her present life and showed her how he had followed her without her realizing he was following. “How could that be?” She wondered as she broke out in cold sweat. “Maybe, I am losing my mind”, she thought. She grabbed a notebook and pencil from her bedside table and started jotting down what she could remember about the dream journey with her childhood cat.
The dreamer was raised in an African culture, where children were taught history and cultural dos and don’ts by elders and parents during fireside story times. She seeks to share this eye-opening experience with a broader audience along with fireside listeners. In the dream above, her childhood cat was the griot.
For the reader, this book presents an opportunity to inquire whether her or his night dreams are real. It also asks the reader to consider how other types of dreams we generally talk about, such as daydreams, help one understand one’s current daily living.
